Challenge
The goal was to establish ten type principles that should be used in children’s books, along with a separate storyline within twenty-two pages.
Approach
I decided to write and illustrate my own children’s book to go along with each type principle. The story was aimed at children ages 4–8. I chose a square book format because it’s one of the most common sizes for children’s books. Fonts and text size were specifically chosen in accordance with type principles for children’s readability.
Solution
Pairing and placing multiple fonts with varying sizes was a delicate balance. I had to make sure the fonts matched the imagery and the content, without taking away too much attention from one another. In other words, balancing hierarchy while giving each style a unique treatment. The illustrations became important for communicating the storyline, especially with minimal text and lots of negative space.
